Trade union Solidarity, the National Union of Mineworkers and the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa on Friday inked a two-year 8.5% wage deal with State-owned power utility Eskom.

Solidarity said in a statement that the agreement held a protective clause to reopen wage negotiations should the inflation rate rise above 8.5% during the next two years.

The provisions of the agreement included a stand-by allowance increase of 8.5% for both years and performance bonus hikes from 10% to 12%, said Solidarity head of energy Deon Reyneke.

The employees would receive a housing allowance increase from R2 000 to R2 300 a month in the first year and to R2 600 a month in year two.
