Uganda–Kenya road upgrade project.

Location
The project will upgrade the section of road connecting Kapchorwa, in Uganda, to Kitale, in Kenya.

Project Description
The project will upgrade the Kapchorwa–Kitale road section – 73 km in Uganda and 45 km in Kenya, and the construction of the Suam one-stop border post – which will foster regional trade and unlock the agricultural potential of the project area.

The project also includes the construction of the Eldoret town bypass (32 km), which will reduce traffic congestion in Eldoret, on the Northern Corridor.

In addition, the African Development Bank (AfDB) will finance:
• 5 km of paved access road in Kenya and 20 km of community road in Uganda;
• the creation of a postcrash trauma centre and the provision of two ambulances; and
• the construction of six roadside markets and lorry parking bays.

The total cost of the project is estimated at $253-million.

The project is expected to be completed in 2021.

Latest Developments
The AfDB has approved a loan of $253-million to the Kenya and Uganda governments.

The AfDB loans will cover 89% and 88% of the Uganda ($105.7-million) and Kenya ($147.3-million) project costs respectively. 

The Uganda and Kenya governments’ contribution will be 11% and 12% respectively.
