JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Trade union Uasa on Friday called for the practical issues discussed at last week’s mining meeting with Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe to be implemented as soon as possible.

“This will prevent the meeting from becoming just another talk shop followed by non-implementation, as has been the case with previous accords,” Uasa spokesperson André Venter said in a statement.

The union said it was “encouraged” by the draft accord that representatives of business and labour agreed on under Motlanthe’s auspices.

Organised labour and business broadly agreed that it was crucial to ensure law and order in the mining sector and committed to continue to meet quarterly over the next 12 months, or as frequently as required, to ensure common action to address blockages and new issues, should they arise.
