US President Donald Trump on July 7 informed South Africa of its intention to impose a 30% tariff on South African products exported to the US, separate from sectoral tariffs, from August 1.

This was revealed in a letter addressed to President Cyril Ramaphosa and published by Trump on his Truth Social platform.

South Africa was among a number of countries to receive letters from the US President, setting out planned tariffs to take effect from August 1.

Trump initially announced a 31% tariff on South African exports to the US in April, but then agreed to a three-month delay to discuss trade relations with its trading partners.

Engineering News reported on July 1 that the South African government had, during a June 24 meeting with Assistant US Trade Representative responsible for Africa Connie Hamilton, reiterated a request for a further extension to the halt in the implementation of tariffs beyond July 9.
