Travel industry supports 1 in 11 jobs worldwide
As travel and tourism’s contribution to the world economy grew for the fourth consecutive year in 2013, the sector provided support for 1 in 11 jobs worldwide, a report by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) revealed on Wednesday.
WTTC president and CEO David Scowsill said in a statement that 2013 proved “another successful year” for the sector after contributing $7-trillion to the global economy – a number expected to rise 4.3% in 2014.
The report noted that the industry had supported 265.8-million jobs – direct and indirect – representing 8.9% of total employment globally.
In South Africa, where the travel and tourism industry was expected to rise 3.6% during 2014, the industry supported 1.4-million jobs, or 10.1% of total employment. The total contribution to gross domestic product reached R323-billion, or 9.5%.
“It is clear that the growth in travel and tourism demand from emerging markets continues with pace, as the burgeoning middle-classes, especially from Asia and Latin America, are willing and more able than ever to travel both within and beyond their borders,” said Scowsill.
But, while the outlook for the travel and tourism industry looked “extremely favourable” for the next ten years, with growth forecast at more than 4% a year, governments would need to implement more open visa regimes and adopt intelligent rather than punitive taxation policies.
“It is also critical that public–private partnerships ensure that long-term infrastructure and human resource needs are planned responsibly and sustainably to absorb the inevitable growth that we are forecasting,” Scowsill stressed.
WTTC undertakes an economic analysis every year of the impact of the travel and tourism sector in 184 countries.
