Name of the Project
Trafford Energy Park – CryoBattery project.

Location
The facility is planned to be located in Trafford, Greater Manchester, in England.

Project Owner/s
Highview Power and Japanese company Sumitomo Heavy Industries (SHI).

Project Description
The project entails the construction of the world’s largest and first commercial liquid air battery facility. The proposed 200 MW facility, with an energy capacity of 4.8 GWh, could serve 200 000 homes of average demand for a day.

The CryoBattery project will help the UK take advantage of most of the energy generated from its world-class solar and wind sectors.

The CryoBattery works using electricity to cool and compress air, turning it into liquid and storing it in industrial-size containers. It then feeds the liquid through a turbine, turning it back into electricity and pumping it back into the grid when it is needed.

Potential Job Creation
The project is expected to create more than 200 jobs and put the city at the forefront of the latest green technologies.

Capital Expenditure
The project will cost £85-million to implement.

The UK government is supporting the project with a £10-million investment, while Highview has also received £35-million from SHI.

Planned Start/End Date
The project is expected to be operational in 2022.
