Trade conditions remain stagnant

Trade conditions remained “in positive territory” in February after a significant decline in December, the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Sacci) said on Wednesday.

The organisation’s trade conditions survey revealed an improvement in the trade activity index (TAI) from the 42 index points recorded in December, to 52 and 51 index points in January and February respectively.

However, an uncharacteristic five-index-point decline in the seasonally adjusted TAI from 54 in January, to 49 in February was “concerning” when contextualised against the depressed business climate revealed by Sacci’s most recent Business Confidence Index, the group said.

Historically, the TAI recorded strong increases from January to February.

Further, despite a slight decline in the trade expectations index (TEI) from 65 points in January to 63 points in February, trade prospects for the next six months remained good.

The seasonally adjusted TEI stood at 61 points in February – above the 59 points reported in December, but 3 points lower than in February 2012.
