The Mining Qualification Authority (MQA) will be celebrating the International Literacy Day on Saturday, 7 September 2024 at the Zululand Chamber of Business Foundation (ZCBF) in Richards Bay, KwaZulu Natal.

Close to eight hundred (800) delegates from across South African mining houses are expected to gather and celebrate the day under the theme “Literacy key for technological skills of the future’’.

The event will be celebrating the achievements of AET programmes, to encourage individuals in the mining and minerals sector and surrounding mining communities (new entrants, learners who are currently on AET programmes) to participate in AET programmes to improve literacy levels.

International Literacy Day is a day that is celebrated and recognised both nationally and internationally, on 08 September annually. On this day countless activities take place to raise awareness about the significance of global literacy needs.

The world started celebrating International Literacy Day as far back as 1966 and 2024 marks 58 years of these celebrations. These celebrations are there to remind societies of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights, as well as to advance the literacy agenda towards a more literate and sustainable society.

Among the dignitaries that are expected to attend the event are the Department of Higher Education and Training representatives, organised labour representatives from the National Union of Mine Workers (NUM), the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA), the United Association of South Africa (UASA), the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU),
