Telkom, ShowMax in VOD unlimited data deal
To bolster South Africa’s modest uptake of subscription video on demand (VoD), telecommunications group Telkom is moving to eliminate the two main market barriers – the availability of services and data use concerns.
All existing and new Telkom Summer Unlimited customers would be provided with unlimited data to stream content on VoD service ShowMax.
In a deal with the Naspers subscription service, Telkom would also offer customers signing up for the SmartHome Premium or SmartPlan 100 package before the end of December, 30-day access to ShowMax.
“Subscription VoD is a relatively new concept in South Africa, with data use and concerns over data caps being the main barriers to adoption. In the four months since we launched ShowMax, the clear message is that people love the concept and the content and now all they need is a solution on the data side of things,” ShowMax South Africa GM John Kotsaftis said on Tuesday.
“The move to VoD is happening across the globe, and we think it’s going to change the way people experience shows and movies in South Africa,” added Telkom Consumer MD Attila Vitai.
ShowMax boasted more than 20 000 episodes of local and international television (TV) series and movies, which could be viewed on smart TVs, laptops and desktop personal computers, tablets and smartphones.
To access the VoD services, existing Telkom fixed-broadband customers could upgrade to a package with 10 Mb/s and higher and subscribe to the Telkom Internet Uncapped Entertainment Service, while new Telkom fixed-broadband customers could subscribe to Telkom’s SmartHome Premium package, which included the Telkom Internet Uncapped Entertainment Service for a period of 24 months.
New mobile customers could subscribe to the SmartPlan 100 package, which included Unlimited Telkom data until March 31, 2016.
