Telecommunications group Telkom on Wednesday denied that 13 000 workers would be retrenched as part of its voluntary downsizing programme.

Telkom earlier this week said it would embark on a voluntary separation and early retirement process, but emphasised that no employee was obligated to take up the offer.

“… this is not a Section 189 process in disguise and this is not the first time Telkom has made this offer available to all categories of employees,” the group said in a statement.

Telkom would assess the outcome of the process based on the impact to the group’s cost structure, instead of a reduction in its employees base.
