Telkom has entered into a new roaming agreement with MTN, effective November 1.

The latest agreement with MTN, for the provision of second-generation (2G), third-generation (3G) and fourth-generation (4G) services, bolsters network capacity for Telkom clients, who have had access to 2G, 3G and 4G services from Vodacom South Africa since December 2018.

In November 2018, Telkom had concluded a roaming and facilities leasing agreement ahead of the June 2019 expiration of a roaming deal previously held with MTN. At the time, Telkom undertook a phased transition from MTN to Vodacom.

An innovative approach to network deployment allows Telkom, which operates a network of about 6 900 base stations, to provide customers with “the best coverage the country has to offer”, whether on the Telkom network or through network partners, says Telkom Consumer CEO Lunga Siyo.

“The access to MTN South Africa’s 2G, 3G and 4G networks adds coverage while reducing Telkom’s overall roaming costs. The addition of a second roaming partner is well within our current roaming spend,” Siyo comments
