Telkom implements wage agreement
Telecommunications group Telkom would implement its three-year wage agreement for defined bargaining unit employees across all unions, including Solidarity.
The JSE-listed firm, which reached an agreement with the largest union at Telkom, the Communication Workers Union, last week, offered a 6% pay hike in a wage deal – effective April 2013 – that was structured to correct salary disparities between employees during the next three years.
This would mean that about 1 700 of the 18 500-strong employee base would not receive direct wage adjustments.
The implementation process included a “special payroll run”, as well as the two-tranche payment of back pay on August 7 and August 23.
CEO Sipho Maseko quoted the South African Communications Union president Michael Hare as saying that the union was “obliged” to conclude an agreement after the majority of the 45% of its Telkom-affiliated members that had participated in a ballot were in favour of the deal.
The union was expected to sign the deal next week. Solidarity, however, publicly disputed that an agreement had been reached.
