Telkom expands fibre-to-the-home ambitions

Telecommunications giant Telkom plans to expands its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) project to include another 25 suburbs by the end of September.

The addition of fibre-targeted suburbs in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town, Bloemfontein and Port Elizabeth formed part of the group’s plans to roll out FTTH passed 500 000 homes by the end of 2016 and one-million homes by 2018, Telkom said on Tuesday.

The company had already passed 38 000 homes with its fibre network, which allowed for download speeds of up to 100 Mb/s without interference from electromagnetic noise, such as radios, motors, powerlines, electric fences or other cables, leaving fibre as a reliable and stable broadband product.

The new suburbs comprised Hillcrest, in Kimberley; Rayton Ridge and Universitas Ridge, in Bloemfontein; Assagay, Ballito Industrial Park, Bothas Hill, Hillcrest, Westmead and Mount Edgecombe Country Estate 2, in Durban; Dunkeld, Atholl, Bryanston, Houghton, Forest Town, Hyde Park, Craighall and River Club, in Johannesburg; Hazelwood, Menlo Park, Route 21 Corporate Park and Waterkloof, in Pretoria; Hallack Road, in Port Elizabeth; and Atlantic Beach Golf Estate, Van Riebeeckshof (Welgemoed), Oude Westhof (Welgemoed) and Durbanvale, in Cape Town.
