The Tambo Springs Development Company is the landowner and master developer.

The City of Ekurhuleni will provide major bulk services for the development.

Project Description
The project will be developed as part of a next-generation logistics gateway – the Tambo Springs Logistics Gateway – being developed by the Tambo Springs Development Company. The project will combine direct terminal handling facilities and back-of-terminal property development, and related value-add logistics services and activities.

The terminal will comprise two intermodal platforms equipped with six transtainer cranes on Burbak rails, among other developments.

The Tambo Springs Intermodal Terminal is aligned to government’s Strategic Infrastructure Project 2, which centres around the Durban–Free State–Gauteng corridor. The intermodal terminal also forms part of the Gauteng Integrated Transport Master Plan.

Potential Job Creation
About 191 000 permanent and construction jobs will be created during the construction of the intermodal facility, comprising 81 000 jobs during the construction of the intermodal terminal and 110 000 permanent jobs through transport, manufacturing and logistics operations.

Capital Expenditure
The project will require a capital investment of about R2.5-billion.

Planned Start/End Date
The terminal is expected to be fully operational between 2022 and 2023, with projected throughput projected estimated at
189 600 twenty-foot equivalent units.

Latest Developments
The Southern Palace Joint Venture Consortium has been awarded a 20-year concession for the construction of the Tambo Springs Intermodal Terminal by Transnet for the design, financing, construction, operation and maintenance of the intermodal container terminal forming part of the Tambo Springs Logistics Gateway development.

The consortium comprises  Southern Palace as the lead concessionaire, Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane as the technical partner and Makoya as the logistics partner. The consortium will be supported by Concor, AECOM and Italferr.
