Tambo Springs Inland Port and Logistics Gateway project, South Africa
Name and Location
Tambo Springs Inland Port and Logistics Gateway project, Gauteng, South Africa.
Client
Tambo Springs Development Company (TSDC), in partnership with the South African government.
Project Description
The project involves the development of a 1 037 ha multimodal freight gateway. It will be developed in phases on a market-driven approach.
The inland port will be located along the N3, about 21 km from Heidelberg, in Gauteng, and will host all aspects of warehousing, distribution, manufacturing and shipping through enhanced supply-chain and operating efficiencies. It will include:
• an intermodal freight-transportation component, including a major new rail terminal and an intermodal yard with rail access;
• a value-added logistics park, accommodating businesses involved in the transportation, processing, manufacture, warehousing and distribution functions;
• a business park, accommodating a commercial component;
• the development of a retail support component;
• the development of a residential component;
• an agro-industrial component, focusing on high-value products; and
• an advanced telecommunications networks/application.
The facility is planned to accommodate a new state-of-the-art rail terminal facility and an intermodal rail yard capable of the handling point-to-point movement of freight using ‘block trains’ of up to 2 km in length. This is possible because the Tambo Springs property has an existing dual-directional freight rail line, which runs along the north-western boundary for about 3.5 km.
