Project Description
The Tahrir project will be the largest petrochemicals plant in Egypt and one of the largest naphtha cracker plants in the world. It will include associated derivatives units, and three polyethylene units. The plant will produce an estimated 1.5-million metric tons a year of ethylene that will be processed in the polyethylene units to produce 1.35-million tonnes of high-density polyethylene and linear low-density polyethylene, about 925 000 t/y of polymer grade propylene, which is converted to polypropylene, 250 000 t/y of butadiene, 350 000 t/y of benzene and 130 000 t/y of gas oil.
Potential Job Creation
The petrochemicals complex is expected to create about 20 000 direct and 15 000 indirect jobs during construction. Once operational, it will employ more than 3 000 skilled workers, and its products will be used as raw materials in the manufacture of other goods.
The project is expected to ultimately create more than 200 000 job opportunities in downstream sectors.
Value
The project is estimated at $11-billion.
Duration
Construction is expected to start in the third quarter of 2019 and Carbon Holdings expects to start production from the complex in 2022 and reach full capacity by the end of that year.
Latest Developments
Carbon Holdings secured $1,25-billion in funding from the Africa Finance Corporation in December last year.
