Project Description
The Sylmar converter station is the southern station on the Pacific Intertie, a 1 360 km HVDC link that interconnects to the Celilo converter station near the Columbia river, in Oregon.
The Pacific Intertie allows for power to flow between north-west and southern California.
Normally, the power flow is from north to south, but, during winter, the north consumes significant quantities of
power for heating, while the south requires less, and the power flow is reversed. This helps to balance supply with demand.
The project aims to modernise the Sylmar HVDC converter station.
Other key components of the station upgrade include alternating and direct current filters, shunt reactors, and measurement and auxiliary equipment.
Digitalisation will be a key feature in the upgrade.
