PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The first phase of a study into an independent railway to service iron-ore mines in the east Pilbara has been completed, with iron-ore miner Brockman Mining saying it had established the merits of a new, independent, multiparty rail system.

The independent rail development was a joint study by Brockman, fellow iron-ore miner Atlas Iron and freight specialist Aurizon Operations.

The independent rail system would link iron-ore mines in the east Pilbara to Port Hedland.

“The study has demonstrated the benefits of working with aligned parties to provide infrastructure solutions,” said Brockman Australia’s CEO Russell Tipper.

He noted on Friday that the parties had now extended the existing alliance study agreement until July this year, to examine the east Pilbara rail development and the proposed North West Infrastructure port development, in South West Creek, Port Hedland, as a single integrated infrastructure project.

By doing this, the study would recognise the synergies that could be achieved across the supply chain, and this would form the basis for the next stage of evaluation, being an integrated rail and port prefeasibility study, Tipper said.

The alliance participants were hoping to agree to the scope and timing of the prefeasibility study for the combined port and rail project.
