Striking workers could accept platinum producers' offer individually
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – South Africa’s top three platinum producers have started relaying their revised wage offer directly to striking workers, reiterating the urgency of achieving a mandate from the members of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU).
As “untold” hardships hit employees, families and surrounding communities on the back of the protracted wage strike in the platinum belt, Anglo American Platinum (Amplats), Impala Platinum (Implats) and Lonmin have embarked on a mass communications campaign targeting striking workers – with a mechanism put in place allowing employees to accept the offer individually.
The producers, which have lost a collective R15.3-billion in revenue during the 14-week protected strike at their Rustenburg-based operations, said they preferred a settlement negotiated through AMCU, but would not cede to the union’s demand for it not to communicate their offer directly to employees, who had already lost some R6.8-billion in income.
“The producers have a responsibility to ensure that employees, including AMCU members, are fully apprised of the latest offer and the options open to them,” the trio said in a statement on Wednesday.
The companies said they would not release detailed information on communications initiatives, the progress made in contacting employees or detailed attendance numbers in an attempt to reduce the risk of intimidation and violence.
