Striking workers at Mercedes-Benz South Africa’s (MBSA’s) East London production plant have agreed to return to work on Tuesday following discussions between the automotive manufacturer and trade union, the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa).

Numsa members embarked on an unprotected strike on May 17 in response to a dispute over work stoppages at the company’s paint shop on May 14.

A Numsa spokesperson told Engineering News Online that its members had agreed to return to work after MBSA made a commitment to investigate the nature of these stoppages.

The company and the union would again meet on May 22 to discuss other demands, including dissatisfaction about the outsourcing of certain manufacturing functions, as well as the provision of a travel allowance.

MBSA said that, prior to Friday’s strike, there had been no major labour-related industrial action at the plant for over 20 years.
