JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – JSE-listed Petmin on Thursday advised its shareholders that, while the strike at its Somkhele anthracite mine, in KwaZulu-Natal continued, production had not been significantly affected.

Petmin stated that it was maintaining mining and processing operations with the assistance of temporary workers.

“All three wash plants at Somkhele remain operational and the mine continues to transport stockpiled product to inland customers and to Richards Bay for export,” the company stated.

About 100 workers employed by the mine’s operator, Tendele Coal Mining, downed tools on September 16, after reaching an impasse in negotiations over wages and employee benefits. On September 27, a further 320 workers joined the strike.

Petmin stated that it and Tendele Coal Mining remained committed to reaching a negotiated settlement with workers.
