Streetlighting upgrade for small towns

The Western Cape towns of Ashton and Montagu have undergone a streetlighting upgrade, with high-intensity discharge technology, being replaced with energy-efficient light-emitting-diode (LED) lighting.

BEKA Schréder supplied the LED lighting solution for the upgrades, which it says have also assisted in improving safety in the towns.

New lighting for the town of Ashton was linked to the construction of the Ashton Arch bridge, South Africa’s first concrete tied arch bridge constructed using a transverse launching method. The bridge crosses the Cogmanskloof river, connecting Ashton and Montagu, and marks the beginning of Route 62, recognised as an important tourist destination and national road.

Focus and Ledstream floodlights, which are designed and manufactured in South Africa, were used to illuminate the arch of the bridge. LED technology is said to offer a number of benefits, including energy savings, excellent colour rendering, a long lifetime and reduced maintenance costs.

The bridge’s road and most of Ashton’s main roads have been fitted with BEKA Schréder’s Ledlume-maxi LED streetlights. The range is designed and manufactured in South Africa and is said to offer flexible combinations of LED modules, and a choice of currents and dimming options to help maximise energy savings and provide a cost-effective solution.

The company’s Albany LED streetlights have been installed in Montagu, a town situated 12 km from Ashton. The range of luminaires was chosen because of its aesthetics – designed in a classic, Victorian style with modern technology that offers energy savings and a low carbon footprint.

BEKA Schréder highlights that its locally developed and manufactured energy-efficient LED lighting products are designed to be suitable for local conditions.
