TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – Montreal-headquartered Stornoway Diamonds on Tuesday reported a truck driver working for a transport company had died in an accident before midnight on Monday, on the winter road that links Route 167 to the Renard diamond project, in the Northern Quebec region.

The truck driver was part of a convoy transporting materials to the project site when the accident took place. Stornoway promptly notified the Surete du Quebec and the Commission de la Sante et de la Securite du Travail du Quebec of the  event.

Stornoway said it was providing support to the family and colleagues of the victim and the third-party contractors involved, and would work closely with the authorities investigating the accident.

Stornoway in January said it had reduced the estimated capital cost of its Renard diamond project by C$50-million to C$752-million.

This followed the completion of a new mine design and cost optimisation exercise for the project.

Stornoway at the end of February said it had recovered 962.8 ct of diamonds from the Renard 65 bulk sample it collected at its fully owned Renard project. This was consistent with its expectations for the Renard 65 kimberlite.
