JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Aim-listed Stellar Diamonds on Wednesday announced that it had completed the first ore blast as part of its bulk sampling programme at its 100%-owned Tongo kimberlite dyke project, in eastern Sierra Leone.

The company would, in the coming months, extract about 2 000 t of Dyke-1 kimberlite through controlled drilling and blasting.

The extracted kimberlite would be processed through an on-site 5 t/h dense media separation plant, with parcels of diamonds to be exported to Antwerp at intervals for valuation.

Once completed, the entire sample will be subject to diamond value modelling by an independent industry expert.

The bulk sample programme would take about nine months to complete.

“The start of bulk sampling at Tongo is a significant milestone and was successfully undertaken by our experienced mining team. The objective of the bulk sampling programme is to obtain a representative diamond parcel for valuation and price modelling, which forms an integral part of the feasibility study process.

“The Tongo Dyke-1 diamonds are of exceptional quality, with a 1 140 ct parcel previously achieving a modelled average value of $248/ct, even though this parcel did not contain any diamonds larger than 4 ct,” commented Stellar CE Karl Smithson.
