Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) has decided to lift the suspension imposed on Newzroom Afrika and You FM for breaching the lock-up agreement at a press conference held on 9 March 2020.

The decision to lift the suspension follows representations by Newzroom Afrika management on the public’s need for statistical information during this pandemic, and the assurance that the breach of the embargo will not be repeated.

“Stats SA continues to enjoy a good relationship with the media and we deem it important and necessary to continue working together to ensure the people of South Africa have access to statistical information. However, we will not hesitate to take the necessary decisions where procedures are not adhered to,” said Statistician-General Risenga Maluleke.
