PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The Western Australian government has given its approval to ASX-listed Southern Cross Goldfields to proceed with the development of its Marda gold project.

“This approval is an important milestone for the company which allows us to complete our project development pipeline with a series of attractive projects expected to generate significant returns for shareholders,” said Southern Cross MD David Sproule.

“Our first priority is to bring the recently acquired Manuka silver mine, in central New South Wales into production in the next few months. We are working hard on recommencing mining at the Mt Boppy gold project, near Manuka early next year.

“The logical sequence is then to proceed straight to development of Marda,” Sproule said.

The Marda project, which has a resource of some 495 000 oz of gold and a reserve of 175 000 oz, was expected to deliver some 167 000 oz of gold over a four-year mine life.

The project was slated for development by 2017.

The Mt Boppy opencut operation, meanwhile, was expected to deliver about  64 000 oz of gold over a two-year mine life, and would come on line in 2015.
