A South African member committee of the World Energy Council (WEC) has been launched under the aegis of the Energy Council of South Africa.

The member committee is made up of ten high-level energy practitioners drawn from the public and private sectors, namely:

  • Department of Mineral Resources and Energy director-general Jacob Mbele;
  • Eskom strategy and planning GM Matthew Mflathelwa;
  • South African National Energy Development Institute CEO Dr Titus Mathe;
  • Siemens Energy CEO Thabo Molekoa;
  • Seriti Green CEO Peter Venn;
  • Standard Bank Corporate and Investment Banking head of power Rentia van Tonder
  • Mpact Group energy manager and Energy Intensive Users Group member Rosalind Dos Santos;
  • Sappi senior regional electrical engineer Martin Mthembu;
  • University of Cape Town’s Energy System Research Group director Professor Harro von Blottnitz; and
  • Stellenbosch University’s Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies director Professor Cristina Trois.

The WEC South Africa Member Committee, which had its inaugural meeting on May 15, will seek to tap WEC’s international networks for global best practice on market reforms, energy provision and sustainability.

It will also endeavour to provide a platform for dialogue across the energy sector and to become an authoritative voice in energy debates and policy development, as well as on the regulations and frameworks required for a sustainable energy sector.

Energy Council South Africa CEO James Mackay, who presided over the launch, indicated that the WEC South Africa Member Committee was formed with the goal of creating inclusivity and strengthening collaboration among a broad spectrum of stakeholders.
