TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – Vancouver-based diamond miner Lucara Diamond Corp will retain the massive 1 109 ct Lesedi la Rona diamond after it failed to sell at an auction in London.

The company, which found the Type IIa precious gem in November at its flagship Karowe mine, in Botswana, said bidding did not meet the auction’s reserve price.

Lesedi La Rona, which means "Our Light" and which is the second-largest diamond ever recovered, was expected to sell for $70-million.

Lucara had previously reported the diamond to weigh 1 111 ct.
