Somkhele workers down tools
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Despite industrial action entering its second day at JSE-listed Petmin’s Somkhele anthracite mine, operations at the KwaZulu-Natal-based mine continued.
About 100 workers, who were employed by the mine’s operator, Tendele Coal Mining, had downed tools on Monday after reaching an impasse in negotiations over wages and employee benefits.
The firm declined to disclose the demands emerging during the negotiations.
However, Petmin assured shareholders in a statement on Tuesday that mining operations continued as normal on a 24-hour basis and that all three washing plants would continue to run on a 12-hour basis for the duration of the strike.
The statement also noted that sufficient stockpiles were available to continue delivering on the majority of the contracts, but owing to the suspension of night-time shipments, Tendele had reduced the volume of anthracite to be supplied for an export vessel scheduled to load this week.
The daytime shipments of anthracite to domestic and export customers continued and product scheduled for a second export vessel had already been delivered and was not affected by the industrial action.
Discussions with labour representatives continued and Petmin said it hoped to resolve the industrial action with a settlement that would be acceptable to all parties.
