JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Trade union Solidarity on Wednesday accused the Chamber of Mines (CoM) of negotiating the gold wage agreements “in bad faith” after declaring a dispute against the union and withdrawing its offer.

A spokesperson for the CoM confirmed to Mining Weekly Online that it had declared a dispute against Solidarity, but would not divulge the details behind its decision at this stage.

Solidarity general-secretary Gideon du Plessis said in a statement that the union would now seek legal advice.

“The trade union is extremely disappointed in the chamber, as it has now confirmed that it is indeed not a reliable role-player,” he said.

This followed Solidarity’s acceptance on Monday of the CoM’s final offer in this year’s gold wage negotiations, a move which was later sidelined as the offer remained contingent on the acceptance of all the unions represented in the gold sector.

The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union and the National Union of Mineworkers had rejected the offer.
