To successfully execute major electrical works for a plant upgrade at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, Solid Wedge had to adopt an agile approach, continually assessing risks, and adjusting operations accordingly.

The first COVID-19 case in South Africa was recorded on March 5, 2020. On March 23, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the first 21-day lockdown from March 26 to April 16, 2020, to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

Despite the challenges wrought by the pandemic, including the difficulty of sourcing material and constrained movements of goods and people, Solid Wedge was still able to execute a major plant upgrade project for SA Union on time and within budget.

The R900 000 project entailed all the electrical works for the plant upgrade, plant improvements and maintenance, as well as procurement of materials, including mechanical support systems.

“The project was executed during the very first lockdown in the country. We had to contend with restrictions to movement of people and supply chain constraints. It was so difficult to source some of the materials we needed for the project as most of the manufacturing companies were closed during this time. We had to be agile to get the better of these challenges, and in the end the project was delivered on time and within budget,” says Lloyd Dzinotyiwei, MD of Solid Wedge.
