The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) Faculty of Engineering on Wednesday awarded 91-year-old engineer Sir Jack Zunz an Honourary Doctorate of Science in Engineering.

This was in recognition of his “vast contribution” to engineering and the built environment, as well as his philanthropic initiatives, implemented through the Ove Arup Foundation.

James Oppenheim, a long-standing colleague of Sir Jack and director of Arup, accepted the scroll on his behalf.

Sir Jack was considered a trailblazer in providing “total design” engineering solutions, including leading the team that solved the engineering challenges on the Sydney Opera House’s now iconic roof structure.

Sir Jack graduated in civil engineering from Wits in 1948.
