JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Aim-listed Sierra Rutile said on Wednesday that its Lanti mining operation and concentrating plant were both operating in excess of its 3.5-million-tonnes-a-year production capability, and would contribute between 30 000 t and 35 000 t of rutile to its expected total output of 125 000 t for 2013.

The dry mining concentrator recently underwent a 168-hour performance test, during which it exceeded its nameplate capacity of 500 t/h, having operated at a feed rate of 522 t/h.

The Sierra-Leone-based project, which was built within budget and ahead of the original timeline, was designed and constructed within a 12-month period, and consists of a truck and an excavator mining operation, as well as a concentrator plant.

The resulting heavy mineral concentrate product is trucked to Sierra Rutile's central mineral separation plant, where it is processed into finished-product rutile, ilmenite and zircon concentrate.

CEO John Sisay said the ramp-up of Lanti to its full capacity within four months of its start-up was a significant achievement.

“The successful implementation and ramp-up of this project gives me great confidence in our ability to successfully deliver our next expansion project, the Gangama dry mining project, when market conditions justify its construction,” he commented.

A recently completed prefeasibility study indicated that Gangama would have an average yearly production profile of 83 400 t of rutile, 46 000 t of ilmenite and 9 500 t of zircon concentrate over a life of six years, for an up-front capital cost of $103-million over its 12-month construction period.
