Canadian miner Sherritt International said on Monday that a worker had died in a vehicle-related accident at its Moa joint venture mine, in Cuba.

“Sherritt is deeply saddened by this tragic incident,” said president and CEO Leon Binedell.

“Our priority is always the safety and wellbeing of our employees, and we would like to express our heartfelt condolences and our deepest sympathies to the individual’s family, friends, and colleagues. We work hard to prevent accidents and are fully committed to understanding the root causes that led to this incident in order to prevent future incidents from occurring at our operations.”

Sherritt has initiated its investigation and is working with local authorities to determine the cause of the accident.
