JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Shaft sinking and underground construction group Shaft Sinkers on Wednesday said it had secured £11.4-million worth of additional work at platinum miner Lonmin’s Karee operations, in Rustenburg.

The work, which comprised the extension of the Karee 3 UG2 project decline and the ongoing operation and maintenance of the decline shaft, would kick off immediately, with completion expected in October 2015.

Shaft Sinkers would undertake the development and associated civil works and bulk infrastructure, besides others, to extend the Karee 3 UG2 decline from 25 level to 26 level.

The £8.6-million extension would enable Lonmin to access further ore reserves to 900 m below the surface and maintain production levels at Karee 3.

The contract was on an agreed target cost basis, the company noted.

Further, the £2.8-million mine shaft maintenance contract was a cost-plus contract to maintain and equip the shaft.
