Technology manufacturer Samsung South Africa has introduced several ranges of air-conditioning systems this year, which are specifically tailored to African conditions, states divisional head of digital air solutions Michael Mckechnie.

He tells Engineering News that Samsung South Africa launched its Q9000 turbo jet air-conditioning system in June.

Mckechnie  explains that the Q9000 turbo jet cooling air-conditioning system is equipped with front-facing independent triple fans, which provide an intelligent balance of power and control.

“The Q9000 provides ultra-efficient cooling and energy efficiency with a maximum cooling speed of 18 m4/min, which is significantly higher than those of standard air-conditioners,” he says.

He states that the Q9000 turbo jet has three powerful spiral airflows, created by the system’s jet engine mechanism, which can cool an entire house quicker and more efficiently than similar air-conditioning systems.

Additionally, Mckechnie says the Q9000 turbo jet contains seven types of airflow, which can operate different types of cooling to suit various activities using three separate fans, which can be operated independently or together.

Max Inverter Range

Mckechnie tells Engineering News that, Samsung South Africa continues to grow market share in Inverter Room Air Conditioning, with its range of Max products.

He says Samsung’s triple protector on the Max Inverter ensures maximum reliability and durability.

“The energy efficient Samsung Max Inverter technology reduces electricity
consumption by as much as 40%, compared with conventional air-conditioners, and is equipped with cooling and heating functions,” Mckechnie points out.

The Max Inverter antibacterial coating and a full high-definition filter not only trap microscopic dust particles but also kill germs and deodorise.

Mckechnie notes that the Max Inverter’s Good Sleep II mode automatically adjusts the temperature and humidity in a building at night.

Max Inverter’s auto changeover function provides constant temperature regulation and is operated using ecofriendly R410A gas.

DVM S Range

Samsung South Africa also launched Samsung's Digital Variable Multisystem (DVM) Plus S range of air-conditioning systems in March. Mckechnie tells Engineering News that the range has been well received by the market, especially by consulting engineers, owing to its high levels of energy efficiency and simplicity of installation in large commercial and industrial projects.

He explains that the DVM S Heat Recovery air-conditioning system enables operators to deliver simultaneous heating and cooling options with a single outdoor unit.

“The key aspect is that, where possible, heat is recycled, transferring it from where it is redundant to areas where it is required, making it ideal for work environments where the specific business activity, such as hotels, offices and hospitals, requires a combination of multiple temperatures simultaneously,” cites Mckechnie.

Moreover, he stresses that the system also satisfies the diverse requirements of medium and large office spaces, where different heating and cooling operations are used for interior and perimeter zones.

“In addition to flexibility, the DVM S recycling technique delivers substantial energy and cost savings,” Mckechnie adds.

Simultaneous Heating and Cooling

Mckechnie highlights that Samsung’s heat-recovery technology uses a microcontroller (MCU) kit to enable a simultaneous cooling and heating operation through different indoor units from a single outdoor unit.

“For commercial and industrial applications requiring multiple temperature levels simultaneously, the DVM S delivers a flexible and reliable solution. Even in cold conditions, cooling may be required to counteract excess heat generated by direct sun or lighting. Alternatively, external factors may contribute to the need for all-year heating in certain areas of a building,” he explains.

Mckechnie says the DVM S uses an MCU kit, which is 33% smaller than those employed by its competitors.

Further, he explains that the internal on/off valve makes it easy for people to control the temperature and enjoy a pleasant, stable environment.

Mckechnie stresses that, owing to its light and compact design, DVM S produces less noise, resulting in fewer disturbances for professionals at work, adding that the system requires less space and, therefore, offers greater installation flexibility.

Operating Performance

Mckechnie asserts that the DVM S air-conditioning system delivers the world’s highest unit capacity, making it ideally suited for any application, giving the customer the ultimate flexibility. 

“It surpasses our competitors by 15% in coefficient performance and by 20% in the energy efficiency ratio. This impressive capacity, especially when combined with its lightweight structure and reduced footprint area, makes installation highly economical,” he states.

Cooling functions provide stable performance, by continuing to operate even when the outdoor unit is recovering oil. Mckechnie explains that, unlike standard systems, there is no reduction in temperature inside while the outdoor unit is calibrating its oil supply. “Instead, the DVM S delivers a constant supply of heat, creating heat performances at low ambient temperatures.”

Moreover, the DVM S’s piping length of 1000 m allows for coverage over large areas, while still ensuring the high level of performance normally associated with more compact spaces.

Mckechnie notes that flexibility can be obtained by selecting a combination of indoor units to best suit the floor plan of a given environment.

Improving Refrigerant Distribution Control

Mckechnie warns that high levels of refrigerant can damage an air-conditioning unit, causing it to perform poorly, which is why the DVM S uses auto performance correction control technology to monitor and adjusting the difference between outdoor and indoor temperatures, ensuring stability throughout its operations.

“The result is refrigerant distribution that guarantees efficient and consistent performance,” he advances.

The DVM S makes the replacing of refrigerant easy and convenient, says Mckechnie, as the pump-down/pump-out combination allows the refrigerant to be kept in outdoor containers when performing pipe maintenance.

He says this results in a significant reduction in time and cost spent on system upkeep.

Sequential Operation of Compressor

Mckechnie says Samsung’s DVM S extends the life span of the unit using a system that reduces impact by alternating its compressor operation.

“The result is a significantly longer-lasting air-conditioning solution, compared with similar products, and reduced ongoing investment costs for businesses.” He points out that the cost benefits include lower maintenance expenses arising from improved performance reliability.

Ecofriendly Technology Certification

Mckechnie says the DVM S was developed to minimise environmental impact and aid electronic recycling.

“Our ecofriendly technology has led to our attaining Restriction of Hazardous Substances certification, which promotes refraining from the use of toxic substances such as mercury, lead and cadmium,” he enthuses.
