Seven missing at Katanga mine after geotech failure

JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Seven people who were working in the vicinity of a geotechnical failure on the north wall of TSX-listed Katanga Mining’s KOV openpit mine, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, are currently unaccounted for, the company announced on Tuesday.

An unknown amount of damage to the dewatering infrastructure in the pit was also expected to have occurred.

Katanga joint-venture company Kamoto Copper Company (KCC) had mobilised its search and rescue team and was in the process of locating the unaccounted for personnel. It was also assessing the damage and recoverability of the affected infrastructure.

Mine operations were currently suspended and KCC was in the process of contacting the families of the missing workers, would be offered full support.

All relevant authorities had been informed.
