State-owned signal distributor Sentech on Monday said the network on which digital terrestrial television (DTT) would operate was on track for completion by March 2014.

Speaking at the Digital TV summit, in Bryanston, Sentech head of network engineering Tebogo Leshope said the network upgrade currently covered over 70% of South Africa and the firm was on track to cover 80% by the end of March.

The company was tasked by the Department of Communications to upgrade its network to ensure that broadcasters could carry their transmissions over the digital signal to consumers, in preparation for South Africa’s move from analogue to digital television.

The DTT network would cover 88% of South Africa by March next year, while signal to the remaining 12%, which was deemed too difficult or uneconomical for terrestrial broadcasting, would be enabled through direct-to-home satellite transmissions.

The networks within Gauteng and the Free State were complete, with Limpopo to be completed by the end of July.

Mpumalanga and the North West, currently 75% and 58% complete respectively, would be fully covered by the terrestrial network by September and November respectively, followed by the Eastern and Western Cape in December.

The coverage for both KwaZulu-Natal and the Northern Cape would be completed by March 2014.

The group was also currently implementing several key initiatives to ensure that the group would be able to sustainably operate and maintain the network post the network upgrade.

These included building automated redundancies onto the network, establishing disaster recovery centres and implementing a centralised remote monitoring and control system.

Sentech would also provide support through its 14 existing operational centres.
