Science summit planned for July
Cabinet Ministers, private research and development companies, science councils, academics and civil society organisations will gather in Limpopo for the inaugural Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) summit, in July.
The Department of Science and Technology (DST) will host the two-day summit at The Legend from July 20 to 21 in efforts to bring together South Africa’s private and public sectors and strengthen the science, technology and innovation sector.
DST chief director for science communication Tommy Makhode told Engineering News Online that the summit provided a platform for the participants to explore ways of strengthening the sector to “play a significant role and make a meaningful contribution” to the country’s aims as outlined in the National Development Plan, New Growth Path and the Industrial Policy Action Plan.
Science and Technology Minister Derek Hanekom noted in his Budget Vote two weeks ago that the summit was one of the steps taken in an effort to implement some the recommendations tabled in a Ministerial review report last year.
The National System of Innovation report, produced by a committee established by former Science and Technology Minister Naledi Pandor, proposed several recommendations to improve the sector as a whole.
This included greater collaboration and cooperation between the public and private sectors.
The committee reviewed South Africa’s landscape of science and technology and assessed its efficiency and readiness for future challenges in the global context.
