SA’s national state of disaster extended to October 15

Cabinet has approved an extension to South Africa’s national state of disaster to October 15.
Last month Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma gazetted an extension which was initially meant to run until September 15.
South Africa declared a national state of disaster on March 15, 2020 in response to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
Cabinet approved that the country should remain on Alert Level 3 of the national response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Since August 31, more than 12-million doses of Covid-19 vaccines have been administered across the country.
Cabinet noted the increasing number of vaccination sites, extended vaccination days and the provision of free transport by provinces, which it says will result in a significant increase in the number of people who will be fully vaccinated.
The Department of Health (DoH) has assured Cabinet that more work is being done to understand and contain the reported school cluster outbreaks, particularly in the Eastern Cape.
Cabinet is also appealing to parents, learners and school governing bodies to ensure strict adherence to the wearing of masks, ventilation, social distancing and handwashing hygiene.
It stated that strict adherence to the non-pharmaceutical health protocols remained the most effective defence against the spread of the virus.
Meanwhile, it is also encouraging unvaccinated people, especially those at high risk of developing severe illness, to vaccinate as quickly as possible.
“Vaccines hold good benefits for our health as they prevent serious illness, hospitalisation and death,” Cabinet stressed, also urging the dissemination of verified information about vaccines provided by the DoH and World Health Organisation.
