Saps remain unbiased – General Sitole
In the face of allegations of police abuse against South Africans and confirmation of police arrests this past week, the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (Saps) General Khehla Sitole on Monday urged all Saps members to remain focused on flattening the curve of the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, saying fighting corruption and restoring the Saps’ integrity remained police management’s top priority.
Twelve Saps members, including a reservist, were arrested this weekend for violating the National Disaster Management Regulations and corruption.
All members involved would face criminal charges.
“The arrest of our own is both disheartening and at the same time pleasing in a sense that it shows that the Saps remains unbiased as wells that it has the capacity and the capability to decisively deal with criminality within its ranks,” Sitole said.
He added that the arrests would discourage all Saps members and other law enforcement services from crime and corruption.
He said while the arrests were disappointing, they were isolated incidents, and were indicative of Saps’ commitment in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We continue to urge all our members to remain focused to the cause of ridding our country of the pandemic by continuing with the enforcement of the Disaster Management Act Regulations,” Sitole said.
He went on to applaud the police service for their “hard work and zeal” throughout the national lockdown.
