Industry organisation the South African Institution of Civil Engineering (Saice) has announced that former president Louis de Waal passed away on March 10.

“Louis was a distinguished figure within our community and leaves behind a legacy of remarkable contributions in the field of engineering, particularly in transport infrastructure,” the organisation says.

With a formidable professional career spanning many decades, he played a pivotal role in numerous projects that brought significant value to the Cape region, Saice says.

Beyond his professional achievements, De Waal was known for his advocacy of cycling as both a mode of transport and a recreational pursuit.

His passion for cycling manifested through various initiatives, including his participation in the Cape Town Cycle Tour, as well as the founding of Bicycle Empowerment Network in the early 2000s, it says.

“Louis was not only an engineer, but also a leader who left an indelible mark on our profession. Many of us had the privilege of working alongside him, witnessing his passion, dedication and innovative spirit first-hand.

“For many of us, Louis was more than a colleague or a leader; he was a mentor who generously shared his knowledge, guidance and wisdom. His impact on the early stages of many careers cannot be overstated, and his absence will be deeply felt across our community,” the organisation says.

“We will forever be grateful for his contributions to Saice and the built environment. Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to Louis' family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him during this difficult time.”

“As we mourn the loss of Louis, let us also celebrate the profound impact he had on our profession and the lives of those he touched. His legacy will continue to inspire us as we carry forward his vision of excellence and innovation in engineering,” Saice says.
