Sacu mulls cross-border collaboration pilot project
Agroprocessing and the automotive sector, including auto- motive components manufacturing, were sectors targeted for a possible Southern African cross-border collaboration pilot project.
Of the eight potential priority sectors identified for cross-border collaboration within the Southern African Customs Union (Sacu) work programme, these two could potentially be immediately implemented.
This emerged at the fourth Sacu Summit, held in Gaborone, Botswana, last week.
However, Department of Trade and Industry spokesperson Sidwell Medupe told Engineering News that the pilot project had not yet been finalised and that a Sacu task team had been established to develop a work programme with timelines for the potential cross-collaboration project.
“The process will entail research to identify one project with possible cross-border collaboration, packaging the project to a bankable stage and finding possible investors,” he said in an emailed response to questions.
The outcome would be “project ready” for implementation with the involvement of the private sector.
Sacu’s programme, which, besides others, aimed to facilitate the cross-border movement of goods between the member States, identified priority sectors such as the textile, clothing and apparel; mineral beneficiation and processing; leather and leather products; and energy, including renewable or alternative energy.
The programme also included the arts and crafts; information and communication technology; finan- cial skills development; infrastructure, transport and logistics; and engineering sectors as potential accelerators of collaboration.
Sacu comprised five member States, namely Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa and Swaziland.
