SABS high-voltage lab functional, but repairs, new equipment needed
The South African Bureau of Standards’ (SABS’) high-voltage laboratory is functional, though with capabilities principally in alternating current testing, the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC) has advised.
In response to a Parliamentary question, the department said some equipment at the laboratory needed to be repaired, at an estimated cost of R23-million, while some equipment had to be replaced at an estimated cost of R32.2-million.
Both of these sums are inclusive of equipment and the linked engineering, project management and operational alignment services.
Additionally, the DTIC noted that the number of test reports conducted by the facility had declined from 149 in the 2012/13 financial year, to 50 in the 2018/19 financial year.
Income generated from the laboratory also declined from almost R8.9-million in the 2012/13 financial year, to just over R6.4-million in the 2018/19 financial year.
The DTIC also said that, with between four and seven employees working at the facility at any given time, the yearly running cost of the laboratory had decreased to just over R5.3-million in the 2018/19 financial year, from just over R7-million in the 2012/13 financial year.
