Strike action by members of labour union the National Transport Movement (NTM), had no impact on South African Airways’ (SAA’s) schedule and was called off by lunchtime on Friday, the airline told Engineering News Online.

Fewer than 50 of the 1 111 NTM union members participated in the strike, said the airline, which employed close to 11 000 people.

The union was demanding organisational and collective bargaining rights.

The industrial action followed a conclusion by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) commissioner in December that the NTM failed to meet the required 30% membership threshold, which left the union unrecognised by SAA.

The CCMA commissioner said in his report that the union needed 1 220 members to meet the requirement of 30% of the 4 065 employees who constituted the bargaining unit.

SAA emphasised that there would be no disturbances to flight schedules and that it had activated a contingency plan to avoid any disruptions.
