SA economy added 22 000 new jobs in 2012 Q4 – Stats SA
Employment in the formal, non-agricultural sector increased by 0.3%, or 22 000 people, between September and December, according to the December 2012 Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) survey released by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) on Tuesday.
This brought the total number of those employed in the formal, non-agricultural sector of the South African economy to 8.46-million, up from an estimated 8.44-million in September.
Moreover, the agency said gross earnings paid to employees in the formal, non-agricultural sector increased by 5.9% over the period, amounting to some R393.8-billion, reflecting a quarterly increase of R21.9-billion compared with the prior period.
The survey further showed that employment in the formal non-agricultural sector also increased by 1%, or about 82 000 employees, between the quarters ended December 2011 and December 2012.
Similarly, gross earnings paid to employees in the formal, non-agricultural sector over the year reflected a yearly increase of R28.46-billion, or 7.8%.
The electricity, gas and water supply sector reported the highest yearly increase, with an additional 5.1%, or 3 000 employees between December 2011 and December 2012, followed closely by a 3.8% increase in the number of employees in the transport, storage and communications industry, which added 14 000 workers over the year.
The manufacturing sector posted the most significant yearly decrease in employee numbers, shedding 4 000 workers, or 0.3% of its workforce between December 2011 and December 2012.
