Regional integration and intra-African trade would materialise between South Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Trade and Industry Deputy Minister Elizabeth Thabethe said this week.

During a visit to the DRC’s Maluku special economic zone (SEZ), she encouraged South African investors to explore the opportunities offered by the new SEZ and the possibility of working in partnership with the local enterprises.

DRC Industry and Small and Medium Enterprises Minister Remy Musungayi added that South Africa-based companies were welcome to participate in the unlimited investment opportunities offered by the Maluku SEZ.

“Our government is encouraging investment in the country. This is our first SEZ and it will provide access to land, infrastructure and a conducive business environment to national and international investors,’’ Musungayi said.

Thabethe stated that South Africa was committed to working with the DRC in developing its economy and enabling skills and technology transfer.

“We will not only share the experience [and the lessons learnt during the development of South Africa’s own industrial development zones], and exchange ideas with our Congolese counterparts, but we are also encouraging our businesspeople to come and invest in this SEZ,” she concluded.
