South Africa and Botswana elevated their bilateral relationship to “the highest possible level” on Thursday after President Jacob Zuma formally inaugurated the establishment of the Bi-National Commission (BNC).

Speaking at the inaugural session of the BNC in South Africa, he explained that the initiative was a clear commitment from both countries to consolidate and enhance their bilateral cooperation to a strategic partnership.

The BNC had combined the Joint Permanent Commission for Cooperation and the Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security.

“South Africa and Botswana have enjoyed formal bilateral relations for nearly 20 years now and the level of interaction has continued to grow from strength to strength as we seek new and better ways to improve our cooperation,” Zuma noted.

The framework, which was initiated after an agreement was signed in August last year, provided a platform to expand cooperation to cover a range of areas, including energy, trade and investment, transport, education, communications, science and technology.

Cross-border projects that have the potential to increase and ease movement of goods and services for the mutual benefit of the respective countries also needed expanding, concluded Zuma.
