Corporate social investment (CSI) expenditure in South Africa decreased by 6% year-on-year to R8.1-billion for the 2014/15 financial year, a report has shown.

The ‘Trialogue 2015 CSI Handbook’, which was published on Thursday, included primary research into CSI spending patterns and support in each development sector in South Africa.

A reduction in corporate profits was the primary reason provided by companies participating in the research for the decrease in CSI spending.

The majority of corporates, 92%, invested in education initiatives in 2015, followed by social and community development and health initiatives.

Tertiary education accounted for 27% of corporate spend on education in 2015.
