7 March, 2017 World leaders in Healthcare Engineering, Consulting Engineers Royal HaskoningDHV presented a paper entitled ‘Inspiring Healthcare through Innovation, Western Lessons - African Application’ at the South African Federation of Hospital Engineering (SAFHE) and the Clinical Engineering Association of South Africa’s (CEASA) 12th Biennial Conference and Exhibition being held at the Durban International Convention Centre from the 7th to 9th March 2017.

The theme for the event was ‘Energize Healthcare through Technology – integrating new technology and innovation to improve healthcare services’.

The paper was co-presented by Sander Vorselman, Royal HaskoningDHV’s Director: Business Development for Healthcare and Naeem Cassim, Senior Architect: Healthcare at Royal HaskoningDHV. Coming from a country that has the best health system in Europe for the 6th time in a row as rated by the Euro Heath Consumer Index (EHCI 2016), Royal HaskoningDHV is involved in all Dutch University Hospitals, 70% of general hospitals in the Netherlands, and more than 50 hospital projects around the world.

Vorselman states, “Royal HaskoningDHV is one of a few international engineering consultancy firms that provides one-stop-shop solutions for large healthcare facilities. With offices across South Africa we offer a global experience with expert local delivery”.

Within the South African context Vorselman says, “We realize the need for adaptation of the design and operation; the relationship with the community; the existence of utilities & infrastructure; and the need for sustainable solutions. We also understand the constraints that include limited budgets; limited CAPEX; master planning constraints; maintenance downtime; and the lack of key role players. We can help optimize the price-performance ratio of hospital buildings to strengthen our clients competitive position within the care market”.

The paper co-presented by Vorselman and Cassim encompassed future-proofing designs through the Schillen method; what the hospital of the 21st century will look like; and co-creation with Royal HaskoningDHV’s Smart Solutions that include Virtual Design and Construct (VDC) as well as Building Information Modelling (BIM).

Future-proofing via Schillen Method
When planning a healthcare facility Vorselman believes in future proofing by applying the ‘Schillen’ method which reduces multiple risks as it is an evidence based precedent as opposed to common practice which involves a fragmented approach. The Schillen Method is a compact lean approach in which form follows function. It allows for integrated, modular and flexible planning (capacity, location, configuration) providing smart patient-centric and staff-oriented hospital facilities through fast construction which is highly sustainable due to its modular nature. It utilizes a life cycle costing approach substantially reducing both CAPEX and OPEX.

The hospital of the 21st century!
Hospitals of the future need to be patient centric with staffing centred models that are less clinical and more inviting retaining the human scale. They require modular and flexible design solutions with smart innovative logistics. Designs need to allow for greening of facilities, functional planning and fast track construction. Master-planning of facilities now need to be more adept to future requirements as well as infrastructure inefficiencies.

Designs need to allow for quality care. Improved patient facilities will ensure a reduction in length of patient stay. Designs need to provide better information via integrated technologies as well as interactive information exchange with practitioners; and clear way-finding with less confusion. Vorselman states, “Designs need to be modular and flexible - a modular hospital will contribute to cost effective and efficient healthcare service delivery”.

Smart Solutions
The process of hospital planning needs to embrace the concept of co-creation utilizing innovative tools and technology ensuring efficient logistics, full flexibility and real-time design through interactive planning workshops. Vorselman states, “There are numerous benefits to evidence based results and we have seen better outcomes through integrated technologies and tools. We utilize smart solutions throughout the system; from processes and buildings to energy and optimization”.

Royal HaskoningDHV utilizes Virtual Design Construction (VDC) as an approach that uses the latest available technology and changes the sequentially arranged design process (client – architect – engineering services – quantity surveyor – client - contractors) into an integrated and parallel design session with well-defined milestones.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) enables collaboration, visual communication and information sharing and directly adds measurable value, quality and cost saving measures for all stakeholders during the facilities lifecycle.

The organization’s focus on Healthcare in the 21st Century is on healing environments that stimulate recovery of patients and improves quality of life which is in line with Royal HaskoningDHV’s brand promise of ‘Enhancing Society Together’.
